Measuring Guidelines - for the 'measurer'

Measuring Guidelines

Measurements need to be in inches, all that is needed is an inch tape measure.

It is important to RELAX when being measured as breathing in might make the ‘tummy’ look smaller, but this will affect the measurements and the shirt will be too small, making the tummy look bigger!

The shirt measurements need to be skin measurements, not too tight though, keep the tape measure relaxed when measuring. (Please do not add on extra as the tailor does this when making the shirt)

Height:
(This should be measured in feet and inches) Measure from the floor to the top of the head.

Collar:
Stand in front of the man.  Pass the tape measure around the bottom part of the neck from the back to the front and note the measurement.  (You might already know the size of the collar from shirts he has…although please measure again to be certain).

Chest:
Stand in front of the man.  Ask him to lift up his arms and pass tape measure around the top of the body, then ask him to put his arms down (keep tape measure under arms) so it that it goes around the back and to the front (on the largest part of chest of the chest) across his pecks!

Waist:
Stand in front of the man.  Put the tape measure around the body (middle) above the hips around the stomach to the front…remember make sure he is not breathing in!!  Measure.

Hips:
Stand in front of the man.  Measure around the hips (widest part) pass tape measure around the back on top of the bottom and then bring back across the crotch area.  Measure at the side of hips.

Shoulders:
Stand in front of the man.  Place tape measure across the back of the man’s neck (at the top) measuring shoulder-to-shoulder point.  (If you are wearing a good fitted shirt use the shoulder seams as guidelines)

Sleeves:
Stand in front of the man, whose arms need to be straight down by his side (relaxed). Measure from the shoulder seam to just above the top of their thumb. (where it joins the hand)

Short Sleeves:
The same as above, but measuring from the shoulder seam to just above the elbow.

Length of the shirt:
Stand behind of the man.  Place top of tape measure at bottom of the neck then run the tape measure down the centre of the back to just below the bottom.

Length to wear outside of trousers:
Stand behind the man.  Place top of tape measure at bottom of the neck then run the tape measure down the centre of the back to where he wants the shirt to end outside of his trousers (this is usually middle of bottom).

Bicep:
Measure around the largest part of the Bicep. (Top of the arm)

Forearm:
Measure around the largest part of the Forearm.

Wrist:
Measure around the wrist.
